About Costco

A basic eye exam at Costco is one of the more affordable ways of making sure you take good care of your vision. The prices do tend to vary depending on location.

Most of the time, the optometrists who do the eye exam aren’t actually employees of Costco. They’re usually independent doctors with practices of their own, which is why they set their own prices.

The basic eye exam doesn’t cover contact lens fittings, which is always a service that adds to the cost of the basic eye exam. However, it’s different with other services such as dilation or retinal imaging. These services may cost extra, or it can be part of the eye exam as well.

The basic eye exam covers several key factors regarding your vision. These usually include checking your visual sharpness, the health of your retinas, and the fluid pressure inside the eyes. The doctor will check for common problems like near- or farsightedness, along with astigmatism and presbyopia.

The optometrist will also check out how well your eyes move together, the quality of your peripheral vision, and if you’re color-blind.

You can get an eye exam once you’ve made an appointment with the Costco optometrist. While walk-ins are often possible, it’s best to just schedule an appointment. That way, you also know what the prices will be.

Keep in mind that you don’t have to be a member of Costco to schedule your eye exam. Non-members pay the same price as the members. But Costco runs the optical centers inside their stores, and you will need that membership to buy the Costco products like the glasses, contact lenses, and various eyecare products.

All in all, Costco offers good service at very reasonable rates. This is an excellent option for those health insurance policies do not cover eye exams, since the rates are extremely affordable even without insurance coverage. It’s simply hard to beat these prices, compared to private clinics.

But it also works if you have vision insurance. Just make sure you verify your eligibility before you make your eye exam appointment at Costco. The plan can then cover most of the fee.
