About Visionworks
Visionworks started out in 1988 in San Antonio, Texas, and now it runs more than 700 optical retail stores in 40 states in the US. It’s a retail store for eyewear and optical products, but it also has optometrists who can give you the eye exam you need so you know what kind of eyeglasses or contact lenses to wear.
With Visionworks, you have the option to go with their premium eye exams, which includes using retinal imaging. This is a super-accurate digital imaging system that captures more than 80% of your retina in a single panoramic image. This is a significant improvement over traditional retina scanners, which only show about 10% to 15% of your retina at one time.
If it’s your first time to get an eye exam, then your optometrist will act like a typical doctor and ask you standard questions about your medical history and family health history. They’ll also ask about your general health, and the medications you’re currently taking.
At this point, you may want to ask the optometrist your own questions. These optometrists may be independent doctors who aren’t directly employed by Visionworks, but they’re all willing to answer all your questions as well. That way, you should have a clear understanding of the tests involved, and why they’re part of the eye exam.
In general, the optometrist determines the necessary types of eye tests that will be part of the exam. There are several different tests that may be part of the exam.
The eye muscle test checks over the movement of the muscles that control your eyes, and it will help to reveal any weaknesses in these muscles. Another test is for visual acuity, which involves the famous chart with letters of various sizes.
The refraction test is generally part of the exam, to help your optometrist determine the prescription needed for your glasses. The doctor may also use the visual field test to look over your peripheral vision.
There’s a test for color blindness, and also an examination of the retina. Another test lets the doctor inspect your eyelids, eyelashes, cornea, and iris, plus the fluid chamber between the cornea and iris.
Finally, there’s also the glaucoma screening.
Once these tests are done, then you can get to the retail section of Visionworks to get the contact lenses or eyeglasses you need.
